She gained mainstream recognition as a cast member and writer on the groundbreaking sketch comedy series SCTV (Second City Television), earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in 1982.

Over the following decades, O'Hara starred in hit films including Beetlejuice, Home Alone, and several celebrated mockumentaries directed by Christopher Guest. In 2015, she began portraying the eccentric matriarch Moira Rose in the comedy series Schitt's Creek, a performance that earned her universal critical acclaim and swept all major television acting awards.
