Also known as
Carl XVI Gustaf, Carl Gustaf

He got handed a crown at just 27, and let's be honest, he's seen it all since. Carl Gustaf took the Swedish throne back in 1973 when royalty was looking seriously old-fashioned. He ditched ancient traditions, married a commoner he fell for at the Munich Olympics, and somehow kept the family firm ticking over while parliament stripped away nearly all his political clout.

Now he's the longest-reigning king the country has ever seen. The palace ran into messy tabloid headlines over a bombshell 2010 biography, but he kept going. These days, he spends his time dishing out Nobel Prizes, driving classic cars, and trimming down the royal guest list so Swedish taxpayers don't get stuck with the bill.
