Lesley Stahl was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, and graduated from Wheaton College in 1963. She entered television broadcast journalism in the early 1970s, joining CBS News in 1971. She quickly gained national prominence for her reporting on the Watergate scandal and served as CBS News White House correspondent during the presidential administrations of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush.

From 1983 to 1991, Stahl served as the moderator of CBS's Sunday public affairs program Face the Nation. In 1991, she joined the long-running newsmagazine 60 Minutes as a full-time correspondent, reporting on major global events, political developments, and investigative stories for more than three decades.
