Mark Labbett was born in Tiverton, Devon, England. He earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Oxford and later obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Exeter. Before pursuing professional quizzing, he worked for several years as a secondary school mathematics and physical education teacher while competing in regional and national quiz tournaments.
Labbett gained national recognition as an original 'chaser' on the ITV game show The Chase when it premiered in 2009. His success on the British programme led to regular appearances on international editions of the format, including the United States version on GSN and ABC, as well as the Australian version on the Seven Network.
