Michael James Way was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Belleville. In 2001, he co-founded the rock band My Chemical Romance with his older brother Gerard Way, guitarist Ray Toro, and drummer Matt Pelissier. Way suggested the band's name, which was inspired by Irvine Welsh's book Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. The group achieved global commercial and critical success throughout the 2000s with landmark albums such as Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade.

Following the band's hiatus in 2013, Way launched the musical duo Electric Century with Sleep Station vocalist David Debiak and ventured into comic book writing, co-authoring the DC Young Animal miniseries Collapser. In 2019, My Chemical Romance announced their reunion, and Way returned to perform worldwide stadium and arena tours with the band.
