Spencer Matthews was raised between London and the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy, where his family owned the Eden Rock resort. Before entering television, he worked in finance as a foreign exchange broker in London. He rose to widespread public attention in 2011 as one of the original and central cast members of the E4 structured-reality series Made in Chelsea, featuring prominently across its early seasons.

Following his departure from reality television, Matthews diversified into sports challenges, media hosting, and business. He founded the low- and non-alcoholic drinks company CleanCo in 2019, co-hosts multiple podcasts, and produced and starred in the 2023 documentary Finding Michael, which chronicled an expedition to Mount Everest to locate the body of his late brother.
