Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and Saratoga, California. After making amateur films throughout his youth, he signed a long-term directing contract with Universal Studios in the late 1960s. He gained widespread international recognition with the 1975 release of Jaws, which became the highest-grossing film of its time and helped establish the modern summer blockbuster model.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Spielberg has directed and produced dozens of critically and commercially successful films across genres, including science fiction, adventure, and historical drama. He co-founded DreamWorks Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, earning multiple Academy Awards and remaining one of the most influential directors in cinema history.
